TRADITIONAL JAPANESE ART MEETS THE TROPICS

Gyotaku comes from the Japanese “Gyo" meaning fish and “Taku” meaning rubbing. At first Lisa cleans off any fresh fish, gently paints non toxic black ink onto the real fish, places traditional Japanese rice papers onto the fish and gently rubs the paper making a one of a kind impression meticulously capturing each scale, fins, and any other unique trait. She then brings the print back to her gallery where she trims the paper edges and finally embellishes them with as much or as little color as she sees fit. This type of nature printing began centuries ago with Japanese fisherman as a way to keep record of their catch. Lisa stays close to the traditional methods of this now fine art using non toxic inks so the fish is still safe and edible for everyone to enjoy.

Lisa says, "As a Florida native and growing up sport fishing, Gyotaku unifies my passion for fine art and fishing and I hope you find beauty and inspiration in each unique piece."
